Статистический показатель, в каком-то смысле отражающий состояние экономики в определенный момент и ее ближайшие перспективы. Строится на основе регулярных выборочных опросов населения об ожидаемых изменениях личного материального положения респондентов и их мнениях об экономической ситуации в стране, здоровье экономики в ближайшей перспективе и перспективах долгосрочного экономического роста. Разработан в середине 20-ого века, как Индекс потребительских настроений Мичиганского университета (MCSI), который с тех пор служит в США важным барометром, результаты которого влияют на государственную экономическую политику и фондовые рынки. Когда потребительские ожидания снижаются, рынки обычно реагируют падением, и наоборот. В России индекс начал разрабатываться и публиковаться в процессе утверждения институтов новой рыночной экономики, с 1996 года. При анализе обобщающих и частных индексов потребительских ожиданий населения (см. Индекс потребительской уверенности). наибольшее значение имеет динамика индексов, а не их абсолютная величина.
